Elon Musk, the billionaire Tesla chief executive, frequently tweets about the coin, often resulting in large price increases.

In February, Musk said he will buy out major Dogecoin holders in order to help make the fringe cryptocurrency the “currency of the internet”.

The announcement comes as cryptocurrencies are becoming more mainstream, with Bitcoin having more than tripled in value since the end of last year.

Other accepted digital currencies accepted by airBaltic include Ether (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and four U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoins: USD Coin (USDC), Binance USD (BUSD), Gemini Dollar (GUSD) and Paxos Standard (PAX).

The Latvian company is using BitPay to process the transactions which will convert the received digital currencies into Euros at the current exchange rate.

Back in 2014, the carrier became the first airline in the world to accept payments made in Bitcoin.

“As an innovative airline, we always strive to search for ways to improve the customer experience starting from the booking process,” airBaltic CEO, Martin Gauss said on adding cryptocurrencies.

“Over the years around 1000 clients have used the payment option, which may not seem like a lot, but still offers passengers a unique payment option hard to find elsewhere.”
