Congressman faces misdemeanour criminal charge.

Rep. Madison Cawthorn was cited for bringing a loaded gun into a North Carolina airport.

The congressman was caught carrying a 9 mm handgun at a security checkpoint at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina, the second time he has been stopped with a firearm at an airport since he took office last year.

According to the TSA, the Staccato C2 9 mm handgun was discovered at Checkpoint D shortly before 9 a.m. ET Tuesday.

Upon discovery of the weapon, airport police were immediately called to the checkpoint area.

“Mr. Cawthorn stated that the firearm was his and he was cooperative with the CMPD officers,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said in a statement.

“Mr. Cawthorn was issued a citation for Possession of a Dangerous Weapon on City Property, which is a City of Charlotte Ordinance. Mr. Cawthorn was released, and the CMPD took possession of the firearm, which is normal procedure,” the statement said.

Cawthorn, 26, was not arrested but instead was issued a ticket summoning him to return to court at a later date to answer to the weapon charge.

Anyone convicted of the misdemeanour could get up to 120 days in jail and be fined by both the city government as well as the federal Transportation Security Administration.

The news echoes a similar incident in February 2021, when TSA agents found a 9mm handgun in Cawthorn’s carry-on at Asheville Regional Airport. He was not charged over that incident.

In recent months, Cawthorn has been at the centre of multiple controversies that have sparked criticism from both sides of the aisle.

The congressman hit headlines earlier this month after he was pictured partying in women’s underwear.

The lawmaker, who grew up in a conservative Baptist community in North Carolina, was criticised for his hypocrisy as a staunch opponent to transgender rights.
