Info

IHG often offers a bonus of 80%-100%! So if you don’t need a lot of IHG points in the foreseeable future, don’t buy any to hoard with a lower bonus.

You can save over €1,800 on a single night’s stay by buying points! How? By staying over New Year’s Eve directly on Time Square!

Buy points with an 100% bonus

For 1,000 points + bonus you pay $13.50, $12.50 or $11.50 or even only $10 depending on the number of points you buy:

  • 1,000 – 6,000 points: $13,50 (approx. €11,00)
  • 7,000 – 10,000 points + 100% bonus: $13.50 (approx. €12.00), effectively €6.00/1,000 points
  • 11,000 – 25,000 points + 100% bonus: $11.50 (approx. €10.20), effectively €5.10/1,000 points
  • 26,000 – 60,000 points + 100% bonus: $10.00 (approx. €8.80), effectively €4.40/1,000 points

You get the best price if you buy at least 26,000 points + bonus. Effectively you pay US$5.00 (~€4.43) for 1,000 points including the bonus. The price per point is 0.6 USD cents (approx. 0.53 Euro cents).

You can buy a maximum of 250,000 points per calendar year + the 250,000 bonus points = 500,000 points for US$2,500 (~€2,214).

The promotion is valid until August 1, 2020 06:59 o'clock.

Redeem points effectively

IHG Rewards Points can be redeemed starting from 10,000 points in one of the 4,700 hotels and resorts of the InterContinental Group. PointBreaks even start at only 5,000 points.

Expensive Hotels in New York, London, Hong Kong,…

A good use for the points are redeeming for stays at otherwise very expensive hotels in cities such as New York, Tokyo, Singapore, London, Paris,… But it is only worth it if you are willing to spend more than €200 per night.

Unfortunately, IHG Rewards Club has introduced new categories: Up until recently, you had to pay a maximum of 50,000 points for a hotel, but now 55,000, 60,000 or even 70,000 points per night are a going rate for many expensive redemptions. That eats up a part of the discount.

When converted, 60,000 points = US$288 (~€255) and 70,000 points = US$350 (~€310). On this basis, here is a suggestion:

intercontinental paris buy points
Pay 70,000 points instead of €434 and save roughly €100!

Instead of paying €434 in cash for the room, a points redemption makes much more sense. At a price of €4.05/1000 points you pay effectively only €283.50 for the room!

Usually, depending on the hotel, a points redemption gives you a much better room than a base room anyway. You should always take this into consideration and make sure to check what kind of room a redemption night books into!

Save Around €1,800 Over New Year’s Eve on Times Square!

If you really want to maximize your redemptions, you can book the Crowne Plaza Time Square Manhattan over New Year’s Eve. As a hotel guest, you have direct access to Times Square and don’t have to stand in line from the early afternoon.

There seems to be no minimum stay this year either. So you can book for one night from the 31st of December to the 1st of January for 60,000 points = US$300 (~€266). Normally the hotel will charge you US$2,374 (~€2,102)! An incredible saving of roughly €1,800:

times square points
Book the Crowne Plaza right on Time Square for 60,000 points…
times square dollars
…instead of paying US$2,374 (~€2,102).

The reason why the Crowne Plaza is so expensive is probably the viewing area in front of the Crowne Plaza. However, the Crowne Plaza still requires an additional entrance fee to enter the viewing area.

Bottom Line

Booking hotels with points bought can be a good measure in many cities to keep the price of hotel stays within limits, e.g. during trade fairs or other large events that tend to drive up rates.

However, you should never buy miles or points without a redemption plan. These sales take place regularly and at the same time the points can be devalued at any time by the program e.g. if a new more expensive hotel category is introduced again.

IHG Reward Points do not expire as long as you have one activity per 12 months!

A special feature of IHG Rewards is that the points never expire! You only have to collect or redeem at least one point every 12 months. This makes it much easier to deal with a large stash of points without having to worry about expiry dates.
