American Airlines blames cancelling almost 1,000 flights on bad weather, staffing shortages and maintenance issues Blog

American Airlines cancels summer flights as travel demand too high.

American Airlines is set to cut hundreds of flights over the next three weeks as demand for summer air travel rises faster than once expected.

The cancellations, which could average 50 to 60 flights per day, are due to staffing shortages, maintenance and bad weather, according to the airline.

More than 1% of American Airlines’ schedule in July may be affected, totalling about 950 flights.

A spokesperson for American Airlines said, “The first few weeks of June have brought unprecedented weather to our largest hubs, heavily impacting our operation and causing delays, canceled flights, and disruptions to crewmember schedules and our customers’ plans.

“That, combined with the labor shortages some of our vendors are contending with and the incredibly quick ramp-up of customer demand has led us to build in additional resilience and certainty to our operation by adjusting a fraction of our scheduled flying through mid-July.

“We made targeted changes to impact the fewest number of customers by adjusting flights in markets where we have multiple options for re-accommodation.”

Many AA passengers have taken to social media to complain about the severe delays they have had when rebooking at the airport, with some reportedly having to queue for over 5 hours.

Data on FlightAware showed that on Sunday about 6% of the airline’s mainline schedule was cancelled.

US airlines are scrambling to keep up with a spike in travel demand as governments lift Covid-19 restrictions, after spending much of the past year trying to reduce staff.
