Australian is banned from leaving Israel until the year 9999.

An Australian citizen has been barred from leaving Israel until December 31, 9999 for failing to clear his dues towards child support.

Noam Huppert, 44, has been ordered to pay his ex-wife around $2.4million in child support due to local divorce laws.

He was told by an Israeli court that he is banned from travelling until he coughs up the money.

“Since 2013, I am locked in Israel,” he said, adding that he is one of many Australian citizens who have been “persecuted by the Israeli ‘justice’ system only because they were married to Israeli women”.

Huppert, who works as an analytical chemist, has two children with his former Israeli wife.

According to reports, Huppert’s former spouse moved back to the country in 2011, when their children were aged three months and five years old.

He followed his family in 2012, and says he has not been able to leave for any reason since the court ruling.

Campaigners say this is why fathers married to Israeli women do not get divorced.

In some circumstances, men are ordered to pay 100% or even more of their income to pay for their children.

In its travel advice for Israel, the United States state department includes a warning to US citizens that Israel’s civil and religious courts actively exercise their authority to bar certain individuals, including non-residents, from leaving the country until debts or other legal claims against them are resolved”.
