BA CityFlyer asks pilots to become flight attendants.

BA CityFlyer, a British regional airline, and a wholly owned subsidiary of British Airways, has invited its pilots to train to become flight attendants in order to help with summer demand.

The company has offered captains the chance to do six weeks of training, in what it calls the ‘Discovery’ learning scheme.

The pilots will still receive their over £100,000 salaries while working in the cabin.

Once qualified, pilots that choose to take part in the “Take To The Skies” program, would then work in their new role for a minimum period of 2.5 months.

The program has been advertised internally as a way to “travel to a wide range of destinations,” “meet new people in the business,” and see “what it is really like for our crew to do their job.”

The initiative has received criticism after its parent firm laid off 10,000 staff just two years ago.

A source told British newspaper, The Sun: “This has not gone down well with pilots. They think it’s a complete joke.

“Thousands of jobs were cut and now they’re worried about staff numbers. It’s no surprise to anybody — but this isn’t the way to win back loyalty.”
