Passenger who blew his nose into a blanket slapped with hefty fine.

A passenger has been fined $10,500 after blowing his nose and coughing into a blanket on a JetBlue flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Los Angeles, California in December.

The unnamed man reportedly ignored orders from cabin crew to wear a mask, then coughed and blew his nose into a JetBlue blanket.

A complaint was made prompting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to investigate.

The FAA is now pursuing a $10,500 fine against the passenger.

A zero-tolerance policy was implemented in January after a surge in disruptive behaviour that stemmed from “passengers’ refusals to wear masks” and “violence at the U.S. Capitol,” the FAA said in a statement.

“Passengers who interfere with, physically assault, or threaten to physically assault aircraft crew or anyone else on an aircraft face stiff penalties, including fines of up to $35,000 and imprisonment,” the statement read.

Prior to the zero-tolerance policy, the FAA would use various methods to address unruly passengers including counselling and warnings.

The FAA has conceded that fines are a more effective deterrent for unruly behaviour onboard.
