In the struggle, a number of flight controls were damaged and the plane was no longer safe to fly.

Flight AA488 was grounded and a replacement plane was sent.

“Crew members intervened and the individual was ultimately apprehended by local law enforcement,” Sarah Jantz, a spokeswoman for the airline, said, declining to identify the passenger.

“We applaud our outstanding crew members for their professionalism in handling a difficult situation.”

The original flight was initially set to depart shortly before 3 p.m. local time. After a delay of over seven hours, the replacement plane departed at 10:45 p.m.
