AA to resume alcohol sales next month.

American Airlines, the last major US airline without alcohol for sale in the main cabin, is bringing back in-flight drinks in April.

The company announced it will resume selling alcoholic beverages on some domestic and short-haul international flights starting April 18, a plan it delayed almost a year ago because of a surge in unruly passengers and attacks on crew members.

AA said at the time that alcohol can contribute to “atypical behaviour” and exacerbate stressful situations.

The return of alcohol on AA planes will be available on domestic flights longer than 250 miles.

“Our customers have expressed that having these options onboard is important to their experience with us,” American said in a statement.

April 18 holds significance as it’s the day the mandate that requires people to wear masks in airports and while onboard a flight expires.

In the last few months, most US carriers have brought back drinks onboard their planes, citing customer demand.

However, some unions that represent flight attendants have objected to it.

The union that represents Southwest Airlines flight attendants said it was irresponsible to sell alcohol while mask rules remain in place.

The Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents American Airlines’ flight attendants have yet to comment.
