Dubai makes it own fake rain with drones to tackle 50°C heatwave.

Dubai has successfully made its own fake rain with a method one would expect from a sci-fi movie to tackle the city’s scorching temperatures.

According to the UAE’s National Center of Meteorology, the precipitation was enhanced by cloud seeding operations.

Using drone technology, electrical charges are unleashed into clouds in order for them to clump together, helping water droplets to merge and stick together.

When the merged drops are big enough, they fall as rain.

Alya Al-Mazroui, director of the UAE’s rain-enhancement science-research program, told Arab News in March: “Equipped with a payload of electric-charge emission instruments and customised sensors, these drones will fly at low altitudes and deliver an electric charge to air molecules, which should encourage precipitation.”

Video footage posted online show Dubai experiencing monsoon-like conditions, as it briefly cools off from its 50°C heatwave.

The UAE’s cloud seeding operations, which is in partnership with the University of Reading in the UK, are part of an ongoing $15 million mission to generate rain in the country, which ranks among the world’s top 10 driest.

Many scientists doubt whether cloud seeding has a noticeable impact on annual rainfall levels.
