The Japanese government has asked foreign airlines to limit the number of passengers they bring into the country from overseas to only 100 per flight, amid concern about the spread of new coronavirus variants.

Weekly arrivals are also limited to up to 3,400 passengers.
The tighter limits are in response to the emergence of more contagious variants of the virus around the world.

Japan requires all travellers from ‘red-list’ countries to self-isolate at designated facilities for three days.
With these facilities growing tight on capacity, Japan’s transport ministry were forced to cut the number of visitors from abroad.
Japan Airlines has stopped selling tickets for flights from the UK, France and Germany, which have all seen an increasing number of coronavirus variant cases in the past month.
All Nippon Airways has stopped accepting new reservations for all international flights to Japan since Monday. The new policy is expected to last until March 21.
The government is set to make a decision this month on whether to allow foreign spectators in for the Tokyo Olympics.
